Post Surgery – Ari and her toe

So sorry for the late update everyone, the children have been on and off sick with runny nose and bad coughs. Everyone in the house fell sick and we were all taking turns like a macabre round the chair dance. Ari’s bandages have been removed and replaced with a teeny plaster that can get wet but needs to be patted dry after every shower. The scar is not so red and angry anymore. She went through the surgery like a champion. I have hilarious videos of her right after she woke up from the anaesthetic. She was disoriented but not disoriented enough to ask for an ice block (she got two because I made the mistake of biting a small bit and she threw a very big tanty with big fat tears rolling down her cheeks). The nurse looked at me horrified and said “Mummy shouldn’t have done that! It’s ok sweetie you can get another ok” I was horrified and also relieved that my daughter was well enough to be a spoiled brat.

Thank you to all my kind readers for the kind words of support. Much love.

Surgery Appointment Booked

It’s confirmed! Ari will be admitted next Monday for her surgery. Wish her luck! My poor baby will have to go under general anaesthetic. I am a bit worried about that but still feeling upbeat and positive.

My letter of goodbye to that teeny toe:

Goodbye, special extra tiny toe on the left foot. You were a nice a surprise and we were going to keep you but you have made shoe shopping a mission. We have had to forgo beautiful tiny shoes for practical 2 sizes too big alternatives.

You have made it hard to balance and run at the same time. Getting stuck in places where you shouldn’t be has been a pain. But it hasn’t been all that bad, you are a symbol of how special Ari is. Sad to see you go but go you must so we can look forward to a more stable run, no more hidden promises of a compromised gait, access to a variety of shoes and the very fun notion of her contemplating on whether to wear heels or not can be an option opened to her.

5 Places To Walk Your Dogs Unleashed In Auckland – W is for Walks

We have two Samoyeds who we call Murphy and Kaia;

178117_4926156672167_1447521998_o.jpg

An awesome portrait shot of them by the fabulous Richard Ng

When we can, we bring them for walks, and because I am not a good trainer (I suck) I don’t really like walking them on a leash so I am always on the look out for unleashed dog parks and areas. Below are my 5 fav spots to bring my dogs for a walk 🙂

Bethells Beach

Clare (10)Clare (9)

Bethells beach holds a special place for me and Bron as we used to walk our fist ever Samoyed there who left us too soon (melodramatic blog post about that here) It’s really wild and windy and our dogs love it there. Always makes me feel grateful to be alive with the salt and wind blowing into my face with the sea crashing onto the shore and jutting rocks frame the coastline with the sea gulls flying above us.

Click here: Bethells Beach  for directions along with more info about walking your dog there

Waiatarua Reserve

We love this place so much, that we would travel half an hour from our old place just to walk our dogs here. Now that we are 5 minutes walk away we try to walk the dogs every day and I just love it when we are walking home after a nice run, both dogs become more obedient and are not pulling on the leash. Makes me feel like I have the best dogs in the world!

Waiatarua Reserve is a large wetland area and  has a playground, skate park and place for the dogs to jump in and cool off, a mini off track walk that me and the samo’s love to use in summer to shy away from the heat and sun. It’s an ideal place to bring kids and walk the dogs at the same time. There is something for every little person and beast here.

Big King Reserve

I love coming here as I get to exercise (A LOT) while I walk the dogs, it an old volcanic cone and the view at the top is beautiful.

After I huff and puff my way up there, it always feels good to look up and around. The hill is quite steep but worth it and if you are feeling lazy they have an easier route to follow to reach the top. Plenty of dogs and I see a lot of the dog walkers like to bring their furry charges there.

Orakei Basin

pixelRemuera-Orakei-Basin-Walkway

There are a few areas here that is for unleashed dogs to roam and have a play in the water. We don’t go here often as I have to leash them for a bit before I can actually let them run around and expand their energy.

Soldiers Bay

We have only been here once, but it was lovely and the dogs loved it. The walk to the bay was wonderful, it did not feel like we were in a housing area at all. It was like we were deep in the forest up in the mountains with the wood pigeons cooing at us as we traipsed up and down to get to the bay.

When a good walk is done, a good dog is done.

N is for Nap time

A few weeks ago we were too busy and the twins skipped their naps and had gone to bed by 6.30pm. Blog post on that beautiful event; Skipping Naps For An Early Night With Twins. Now, this is amazing because they are usually in bed by 8.30pm – 9.30pm sometimes even as late as 10.30pm depending on how long their nap was in the afternoon. So, they skipped their nap that day and went to bed early and woke up around 6.30am – 7am. Can you hear it? Can you hear the singing chorus of angels in the background? So epic, I wept with gratitude for this wonderful unexpected moment.

giphy.gif

That was two weeks ago and here is an update on where we are so far. So, we have been trying to skip the naps and grandma is under strict instructions to not let them nap any later then 1.30pm. We have had a few hits and misses and I have learned a few things on the way which are;

  1. When putting toddlers to sleep do not surf on the phone while singing nursery rhymes. It does not work.
  2. When putting toddlers to sleep, lying down in between them and surfing on the phone expecting them to go sleep , it does not work.
  3. When putting toddlers to sleep and you are co-sleeping, do not fall asleep in an exhaustive heap while tapping them to sleep as you will end up waking up disoriented and in pain because they were playing ‘jumping monkeys’ and used you as a base.
  4. When putting toddlers to sleep do not let them use the Ipad in bed thinking “they must be very tired they will fall asleep in minutes”. WRONG! It does not work.11958075_10153786504126913_970608021177273508_o

The only thing that worked (if they haven’t fallen asleep as soon as their heads touches the pillow) is to switch off all the lights, lie in bed with them and sing “1,2,3,4,5…once I caught a fish alive. 6,7,8,9,10 then I let it go again…why did I let it go? Because it bit my finger so. Which finger did it bite? This little finger on my riiiigggghhhtttt” repeat times infinity. As I sing them to sleep I can feel myself slipping too and I try to claw myself out of that sucking black hole called sleep (because I still have so many things to do, like have a life).  I fail and succumb only to wake up 6 hours later in the wee morning wanting to pee and the baby is crying.

D is for Doreen

Doreen means beautiful in Greek and in some parts it is derived from the word Dorothea which means Gift of God.

As a young child I would cling to my mother for comfort and love. When I was around 5 years old one of the stray dogs we took in had died giving birth to a litter of pups (all 12 later died). I clearly remember crying by the window looking out as my father took care of the lifeless body and I was bawling my eyes out clinging onto my mother who said “Why are you crying? You don’t need to cry until like that”. At that time, even as young as I was I thought my mother lacked compassion. Could she not see that I was mourning the death of the dear, dear dog. Could she not ask me so coldly and instead tuck me into her arms and comfort me as I wailed with all my aching heart.

When I was around 18 years old I had joined a traditional beauty contest in Sabah called Unduk Ngadau and I was crying as my mum was doing my makeup. I wanted aunty Lucia to do it as I thought she would know better than my mum. Aunty Lucia use to help organise the pageant and she has help other talents in the competition throughout the years. I am sure she would know better than my mum. Mum asked me “Why are you crying? I can help you with your makeup???”.

Around the same time I had just completed the Miss Malaysia pageant and wanted to go to New Zealand to study and live with a man I barely knew. As we were in the car outside the agents office to purchase the ticket my mother burst into tears telling us not to do it. It was a crazy idea. Me and dad did  not end up buying the ticket and just quietly went home instead.

These are intimate moments I shared with my mother which have shaped me into the person that I am today. I could have shared happy, joyful moments but I thought these moments were far more important. Moments, that I had judged my mother on as being an imperfect mother. A woman who did not understand how I felt and only passed judgement as she saw fit. Only when I became a mother myself did I realise how much she loves me. I could see her in my way of child rearing. The process to thicken the child’s skin so that the world may not hurt them. Better they learn from my harshness then to coddle them and then throw them into the cruel world. Better I be realistic and judgmentaland prepare them for the critics of the world. Let them learn to mourn and pick themselves up when no one else will be there to pick them up.

Everything I do, I see my mother. My mother is me and I am my mother.

Mum, I am sorry for the tough years that I gave you. For being petty and unappreciative of your efforts. I, now know the lengths you went to ensure we had a wonderful childhood. Doing all you could while working full time and still providing a warm home environment for us. I did not appreciate you as much as I should than and now and I hope you know that I love you deeply. You deserve the best and I promise I will try my best to give you the best.

D is for Doreen, my mother.

C is for Cynthia

A good friend came over to visit the twins and Miki. She managed to squeeze us into her busy schedule to stay over a couple of nights. It was so good having her over! The moment she walked through the door, hugs and kisses were shared with the twins (who remember her from her last visit 2 years ago). However, it was not a very successful meeting with baby Miki who took a long hard look at her and started bawling her eyes out.

image

It was hilarious and Cyn did get a little hurt (better luck next time). A beautiful friend inside out with legs up to her neck ( I am always looking at her with envy, those legs…damn). Anyhoo, me and Cynthia met through a mutual friend Genie (who really hates being called Genie but well life doesn’t always give you roses daaahhhliiinggg) and even from the beginning she was such a gentle and kind soul. It wasn’t hard to connect with her and years passed by and she decided to leave Auckland for Kuala Lumpur.

She kept in touch with us. I say ‘she’ and not ‘we’ because I am horrible at keeping in touch, I definitely love my face to face interactions, if, you can get me out of bed. Oh, those were pre-baby times, where I would lounge in bed after uni and just read romance novels all day long while sipping some sinfully sweet, thigh thickening, booty making concoction (usually chocolate). So, we met when were in our very early twenties and almost 8 years later here we are in our thirties with babies (on my part), hating the dating scene and the work that is required (on her part) and still love gossiping over the dinner table while trying hard to stay awake (guess who the aunty is???).

image

While I stay at home with the babies, she is travelling the world and indulging the foodie within her. I love looking at the photos, living through her, enjoying the scenery without having to leave the comfort of my living room and attempt to lug the whole fam bam to fly internationally ( shudder* it really is a scary thought).

We have gone through so much and yet here we are still friends, I find it amazing, I for one can’t even keep a turtle alive much less a lively and engaging relationship (Bron is different, he persevered and now I am obligated to reciprocate :P). Thank you for being you and you know, for picking me, much love.
